This is the cost of 4 minutes of production of 9# tissue on a 220" wide machine at 5000fpm. Perhaps this comes as no surprise, but did you know that using conventional turn-up methods take an average of 10 seconds for each change. Multiply that times 24 reels and you get 4 minutes of lost salable tonnage. Now there is a way to capture these savings with no capital investment.

Prior to 1984, papermaking was focused on increasing production at the wet end of the machine to the extent that waste at the reel was virtually ignored.
